Botanical Name: Impetiginosa Tabebuia (Mart.) Standl., Bignoniaceae.

Similar names and Species:
Tabebuia has about 60 species occurring in the Tropic areas of America, from Mexico to Argentina. In general, species with dense and dark woods are called indistinctly of lpê, Pau-d'arco and Ipeúna. To its name, it is added the color of the flower they carry such as Purple-Ipê, Yellow-Ipê. This specie is also commonly knows in some South American countries as Lapacho.

Commercial Name: Brazilian Walnut

Characteristics of the Wood:
Heartwood is mostly uniform light to dark olive brown with greenish caste. Non-shine surface, smooth to the touch. Uniform texture, fine to medium. Right interlocked grain. Indistinctly taste and odor.

Physical and Mechanical Properties:
The wood is very heavy and hard, with high shock resistance and low volumetric retractability. It is resistant to the attack of insects
and to deterioration.

Moisture Content and Density:
Apparent (15% of humidity): 0,96 g/cm3 - 960 kg/m3

Workability:
Moderately difficult to work especially with hand tools which will lose the sharpening quickly. It finishes smoothly. Glue down problems has been reported. The dust released during milling may cause dermatitis.

Usage:
Ipê can be used in exterior applications such as posts, stakes, piers, sleepers, crosspieces, props. As construction it is used as structure for construction, shakes, beams, doors and windows frames, skirting, parquet, wooden floor and similar uses; furniture, tools handles, truck bodies, ship buildings, musical instruments, stair nose, bowling and bocha balls, etc.
